Low maize prices

Zambian maize prices have ended their free fall but remain well below the regional average, putting pressure on producers. Reuters reported the Agricultural Commodity Exchange as saying on Monday that the prices paid by millers around Lusaka had stabilised at a bid price of US $124 a tonne and an offer price of US $128. At these levels, Zambian commercial farmers, many of whom have to repay hefty loans and have high overheads, are barely able to break even, the dispatch said.
