Prices on the increase

Food prices in Angola have increased by 42 percent during the first four months of 1999, and were expected to continue rising, the official newspaper, ‘Angolense’ reported on Tuesday. Prices in April alone had gone up 8 percent. It said this corresponded “to a reduction of about 30 per cent in the currency’s buying power”. With an inflation rate of 13 percent, it said April was “at the top of the pile” when it came to price hikes. “Nothing good is predicted for the near future. In view of this, there is the need to ensure that earnings are spread out in a more equitable manner,” the newspaper said.
