The Zambia Independent Media Association (ZIMA) said on Monday it was time for the government to show "genuine" commitment to press freedom. In a statement released by ZIMA chairman David Simpson, the association criticised legal proceedings against journalists of 'The Post' newspaper over reporting on Angola's allegations of Zambian arms smuggling to UNITA.
"We remind the ministry (of information) that there is no need for another 'blueprint to guide media operations'," Simpson said. A ZIMA spokesman told IRIN that despite pronouncements to the contrary, the government "continues to harass the independent media and make arrogant utterances rejecting the call for revision of media laws".
