Sierra Leonean military delegation due in Abuja

A Sierra Leonean military delegation was due in Nigeria today for a seven-day official visit to meet their Nigerian counterparts, ECOMOG sources confirmed to IRIN. According to an AFP report, the delegation was being led by the country’s chief of defence staff, Brigadier-General Maxwell Khobe, and is due to visit military training institutions across Nigeria.

Nigeria provides the majority of troops to the 15,000-strong ECOMOG force still in Sierra Leone protecting Kabbah’s government from rebel forces, but recently announced that it wishes to withdraw its troops by end May. According to AFP, Nigeria wants the Sierra Leonean army to take a larger role in defending the country against the rebels.
