Mugabe misses OAU summit

Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe will not attend this year's Organisation of African Unity (OAU) Lome summit because he needs time to work on forming a new cabinet, a presidential spokesman said on Monday.

George Charamba was quoted as saying: "I can confirm that the President is not attending this year's OAU summit, instead he will be represented by Stan Mudenge, the Foreign Minister, who is already in Togo. The president needs time to work on his cabinet."

Mugabe's ruling ZANU-PF party scraped a narrow victory over the main opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) in parliamentary elections two weeks ago, and the 76-year old president is expected to name a new cabinet this week.
