Fire guts magazine offices

    JOHANNESBURG

    A fire gutted the Windhoek office of the 'Sister Namibia' magazine on
    Monday, prompting the editor of the magazine to blame gay bashers. The
    magazine is published by the non-governmental organisation, Sister Namibia, which campaigns for women's rights and gender equality.

    The Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) said the fire was discovered
    during the early hours of the morning. By that time it had already burnt
    most files and research material before fire fighters could extinguish it.

    "Maybe we are being targeted because we are a human rights organisations
    dealing with gay issues," editor Liz Frank told 'The Namibian' newspaper. "I
    don't think President Sam Nujoma and those who speak out against gays and
    lesbians realise that other people turn violent when they make these
    statements," she added.
