Unions threaten strike

    JOHANNESBURG

    Two Mozambican trade union federations have threatened to call out their members on strike in support of a 39 percent wage increase, news reports said.

    The labour bodies - that are part of a tripartite forum involving government, employers and unions - have offered a wage increase of 11.2 percent, which the unions have rejected as derisory.
    A union official was quoted in news reports as saying that the unions would stick to their 39 percent demand.

    “If our demand is not accepted, we shall have no alternative but to go on strike,” said the union official.
