US envoy on regional tour

The US special envoy to the Great lakes region Howard Wolpe is on a regional tour to brief leaders on his government’s position regarding the Lusaka and Arusha peace agreements. “The purpose of the mission is to reaffirm the US position on developments in the region, especially the implementation of the Lusaka agreement and the progress of the Burundi peace negotiations,” a senior official accompanying Wolpe told IRIN in Kampala. “We are looking at a more focused way of dealing with the problems in the region.” According to Radio Uganda, the US special envoy met Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni on Sunday and held “consultative discussions concerning the region”. A diplomatic source told IRIN that the US believes the Lusaka accord can only be implemented in full if a successful strategy is devised to address the problem of non-signatory armed groups mentioned in the agreement.
