About 5,000 Sudanese refugees fleeing fresh fighting have arrived in Adjumani district, northwest Uganda, the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) said in a July report. According to the report, the refugees were families of all age groups, with about 2,000 aged between one and 17 years: “About 80 percent of the refugees who arrived from Sudan are Dinka.”
It said that the refugees had not come directly from their homes, but had been internally displaced in southern Sudan before being forced by fresh fighting to flee across the Ugandan border. The report detailed recent bombings in Bahr el Ghazal province, and quoted John Ashworth of Sudan Focal Point charging that the Sudan government “has resumed its policy of aerial bombardment of civilian targets”. Sudan Focal Point is mandated by the World Council of Churches to work on advocacy and information in Sudan.
