Mbeki meets with Mugabe

South African President Thabo Mbeki led a high-powered ministerial delegation to Zimbabwe on Wednesday to hold bilateral discussions with President Robert Mugabe and members of his cabinet.

Presidential spokeswoman, Tasneem Carrim told IRIN on Wednesday: “This is one of many meetings between the two governments. This visit by President Mbeki is in-line with a commitment that the South African government made earlier this year to support the Zimbabwean government.”
She said that the bilateral discussions were likely to focus on issues surrounding South African assistance for Zimbabwe’s economic recovery.

The visit coincides with a national strike called by the Zimbabwean labour movement, commercial farmers and the official opposition to protest against lawlessness linked to government-backed invasions of white-owned farms. Carrim described the timing of the visit as “purely coincidence”.

Other members of the South African delegation include: The Minister of Trade and Industry - Alec Erwin, Finance Minister - Trevor Manual, Foreign Affairs Minister - Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, Land Affairs Minister Thoko Didiza and the Deputy Minister of Minerals and Energy - Susan Shabangu.
