Mugabe receives SA president Mbeki

Talks in Harare between South African President Thabo Mbeki and his
Zimbabwean counterpart Robert Mugabe on Pretoria’s economic assistance to
its troubled neighbour were described as “very cordial” by a South African
government spokeswoman. The two leaders met in the Zimbabwean capital,
Harare.

“The new Zimbabwean cabinet was introduced to their South African counterparts who accompanied the president. Thereafter, there were bilateral discussions between the various ministers and well as between the two presidents,” Tasneem Carrim told IRIN. She said the talks on Wednesday basically focused on the issue of economic recovery in Zimbabwe. “The South African delegation were briefed on the Zimbabwean economic recovery programme. The discussion also focused on how South Africa could be of assistance to Zimbabwe.”

Carrim added that various regional topics were also discussed, including the upcoming Southern African Development Community (SDAC) summit in Windhoek, Namibia.
