France urges Rwanda to withdraw from DRC

France on Friday called on Rwanda and other belligerents in the DRC conflict “to make the same gesture” as Uganda which announced early this month the start of the withdrawal of its troops from the country. “France takes note of the announcement of the withdrawal of the Ugandan battalions, which remains to be verified by the observers in the UN mission (MONUC),” AFP quoted the French deputy foreign ministry spokesman, Bernard Valero, as saying. “It calls on Rwanda, and then other states militarily present in the DRC to make in turn the same gesture, in conformity with Security Council resolution 1304,” he told a press briefing. France also expressed hope that DRC President Laurent-Desire Kabila would actively support and give the “necessary guarantees” for the UN deployment in the DRC.
