Farmers drop lawsuits

The Commercial Farmers Union (CFU), which represents Zimbabwe’s 4,000 white farmers, announced on Thursday it was withdrawing lawsuits it had launched against the government of President Robert Mugabe to evict liberation war veterans from about 1,000 occupied farms.

News reports said the CFU hoped that the move would pave the way for more amicable negotiations on land redistribution. Mugabe’s government has earmarked more than 3,000 farms to resettle landless blacks.

The farmers union had filed suits against the government for failing to remove the squatters, prompting officials of the ruling ZANU-PF party to take a tougher line against the farmers.
