Repatriation policy defended

Eritrea has insisted that Ethiopia is deliberately holding up a repatriation process by refusing to receive its own nationals. A statement issued by the Eritrean ministry of foreign affairs said the repatriation exercise was primarily voluntary but included a “small number who had to be sent home because they lacked the legal status for residence”. It said the ICRC had been briefed with a request to monitor the process, and asked to provide logistical support. The statement claimed Ethiopia had initially said it could only receive a maximum of 500 of its nationals at a time.
