SA to probe reports of HIV-linked dismissals

The South African government said on Thursday it would investigate accusations by the Mozambican government that some South African mining companies were terminating contracts of HIV positive Mozambican workers.

South African Labour Minister Membathisi Mdladlana was quoted in news reports as saying that he had asked his Mozambican counterpart, Mario Sevene, for more information about the allegations. “If it is true that employers in the mining sector sever contracts of workers because they are HIV positive, undoubtedly employers’ actions are illegal. And this is an issue I am prepared to raise with the mining sector for it to be addressed as a matter of urgency,” he said.
