West African leaders arrive for peace talks

The presidents of Nigeria and Mali, Olusegun Obasanjo and Alpha Oumar Konare, headed to Sierra Leone for peace talks on Monday.

Obasanjo was also to visit neighbouring Liberia for talks with President Charles Taylor, who has been accused of obstructing the peace process. He has denied the charge, pointing out that he helped negotiate the release of UN peacekeepers taken hostage by rebels in Sierra Leone in May.

Konare, the chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), was to return to Mali from Freetown.

A peace accord signed last year between the Kabbah government, the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) rebels and other armed groups is in disarray. Sierra Leone now hosts the largest peacekeeping contingent in the world.
