Police destroy war vets dwellings

    JOHANNESBURG

    Zimbabwean police on Monday burned down huts and brick houses built by liberation war veterans on an occupied white-owned farm in Chitungwiza, about 10 km south of the capital, Harare.

    According to media reports, more than 100 police officers went to the Stoneridge farm on Monday night and ordered the 100 war veterans and their supporters to remove their belongings from the dwellings before setting the buildings on fire.

    But police did not order the veterans off the land which had been occupied since May. The defiant war veterans, said the reports, refused to move, calling the crackdown an act of betrayal. “We will stay until we get our land,” said one occupier, Mbuya Chembire. “Even President Robert Mugabe won’t make us move.”
