MP calls for DRC withdrawal

A Zimbabwean parliamentarian Giles Mutsekwa on Tuesday called for the immediate withdrawal of Zimbabwean soldiers from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), saying their continued presence was derailing the peace process in that country, media reports said.

Mutsekwa told Parliament that the DRC war was costing the Zimbabwean government US $1.3 million a day, and was the main cause of the Zimbabwean government’s overrun on expenditure. “Our intervention has prolonged the suffering of the masses of that country,” the Zimbabwe News Agency said.

Zimbabwe is reported to have deployed about 11,000 soldiers in the DRC where they are supporting DRC President Laurent-Desire Kabila who is under siege from rebels backed by Uganda and Rwanda.
