Christians demonstrate against Sharia in northern state

Members of the Sharia Implementation Committee in the northern Nigerian state of Gombo called off a tour of the area last week because of a violent demonstrations by thousands of Christian youths, state radio reported on Sunday.

Quoting the radio, AFP said at least 10,000 youths armed with stones, sticks and other weapons, set up road blocks and held up traffic for up to eight hours on Friday in the mainly Christian municipalities of Billiri, Kaltungo and Shomgom. AFP said the youths, who belong mainly to an ethnic minority, lit bonfires and carried placards protesting the imposition of Islamic law on non-Muslims.

“They attacked motorists, top government officials and journalists at the scene,” AFP reported Radio Kano as saying.
