President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe has been slapped with a US $400 million civil lawsuit in a US court for alleged human rights abuses against political enemies, ‘The Washington Post’ reported on Saturday.
The newspaper said the suit was filed last week on Thursday in the US District Court in Manhattan, alleging that Mugabe and two associates in his ruling Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriot Front (ZANU-PF) had orchestrated a campaign of violence against opposition parties.
The report added that the plaintiffs reportedly included relatives of three people who were murdered and a political opponent who claimed she was beaten up. It added that the plaintiffs’ attorneys got a court order clearing the way for the Secret Service to hand Mugabe a copy of the lawsuit during his stay in New York for the UN Millennium summit of world leaders. Minister of State Information and Publicity, Jonathan Moyo, told state television on Sunday that he was unaware of the legal suit.
