ZCTU warns of strike

The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) has called for a tripartite meeting with the government to discuss current economic hardships. It said it did not rule out the possibility of a stay-away by workers, the ‘Zimbabwe Standard’ said on Sunday.

The newspaper said the resolution was reached at a ZCTU–convened special general council meeting. The meeting was attended by 50 representatives from ZCTU affiliates, and was chaired by the labour movement’s secretary general, Isidore Zindoga.

Zindoga told reporters at a press conference in Harare that the council had resolved that the tripartite meeting comprising the labour movement, government, and the Employers Confederation of Zimbabwe (Emcoz) be convened on Wednesday to look at the escalating prices of basic goods and services. “When people are economically affected like what is happening today, you cannot rule out the possibility of strike action,” he said. “We, in the labour movement, believe in crossing the rivers when we get to them. But we cannot emphasise enough that everyone is hungry and angry,” he added.
