Government lawyers say Ouattara ineligible

A team of lawyers at the service of Cote d'Ivoire's government on Monday showed journalists documents which they said prove that Rassemblement des Republicains (RDR) leader Alassane Ouattara has had Voltaique (Burkinabe) nationality. A lawyer for the RDR leader denied the claim.

According to the constitution, to run for president a candidate must not have had another nationality and must have been born to Ivoirian parents.

The disclosure came as Ivoirians waited for the verdict of the Supreme Court, which has until 7 October to state which candidates are eligible for presidential polls to be held on 22 November. Both Ouattara and General Robert Guei, head of Cote d'Ivoire's government, are among the candidates.
