Arms cache discovered in president’s residence

State television in Cote d’Ivoire on Tuesday showed images of weapons reportedly found in an office at the presidential residence. The arms were said to have been found in the office of a presidential guard, Sergeant Souleymane Diomande, detained in connection with Monday’s attack on Guei’s residence. AFP quoted Diomande as saying that he had been framed and denying involvement in that attack. He said the weapons had been seized during a 4-5 July mutiny. Most of the weapons shown on television were rifles, but there was at least one automatic weapon. A score of other soldiers have been detained in connection with the attack, including four reportedly held while trying to reach Ghana.
