An estimated 7,000 prisoners around the country are to be freed later this month, Russell Mamabolo, spokesperson for the Department of Correctional Services, said on Monday.
Mamabolo said inmates who had served half of their sentences and were not regarded as a threat to the community would be freed. In addition, those who have allegedly committed minor crimes and been granted bail of R1 000 (US $142) bail or less would also be considered. The latest move follows last month’s release of more than 11,000 awaiting-trial prisoners around South Africa.
