Government denies figures on army deaths

    The defence ministry has denied press reports which said 30 soldiers had been killed and 52 seriously wounded in violent confrontations around Bujumbura last week. In a press release, received by IRIN on Monday, the ministry acknowledged that the army had lost about 10 soldiers and several others had been lightly injured. It said the armed forces were continuing to flush out rebels hiding in the Bujumbura area. Meanwhile, reports from Burundi said there had been violence in the northern of the country over the weekend. The private Netpress news agency said rebels from Rutana and Gitega provinces had linked up and moved north, where they attacked guests at a wedding ceremony in Remera, killing 18 people.
