US Assistant Secretary for African Affairs, Susan Rice, has arrived unexpectedly in Harare for all-round talks during a three-day visit to Zimbabwe, news reports said on Wednesday. Rice said shortly after arriving from South Africa that she had come in a spirit of friendship. She said she hoped to meet government officials, leaders of political parties, and ordinary citizens in order to assess the situation. Rice apparently asked to meet President Robert Mugabe, but no assurance of an appointment had been obtained.
