Mozambican opposition leader Afonso Dhlakama said on Friday he was ready to meet with President Joaquim Chisano to discuss the country’s future following recent nationwide clashes between police and opposition demonstrators which left 41 people dead.
Dhlakama was quoted by the Portuguese news agency Lusa in Maputo as saying that he would write to Chisano, who indicated his readiness for dialogue on Thursday, to outline his concerns. Dhlakama declined to specify his goals, but said his RENAMO party was demanding a power-sharing formula in provinces it won in last December’s election. In the polls, RENAMO took 117 seats in the 250-member legislature.
