Zimbabwe’s tobacco farmers have boosted the cash-strapped country’s export earnings, the Economist Intelligence Unit reported. When the auctions closed on 10 November, some 236 million kg of flue-cured tobacco had been sold at an average price of US 169.2 cents a kg. Although the price was marginally down on last year’s 174.5 c/kg, volumes are up by almost 25 percent and the gross revenue earned by the country’s farmers was close to US $400m, compared with US $332m in 1999.
