Nigeria’s Osun State has sacked 5,000 workers, or about one-quarter of its public workforce, to pay for an increase in wages, AFP reported on Wednesday.
Those dismissed had been deemed to already be of retirement age or to have a bad record or service, a state official was quoted as saying. They would reportedly receive redundancy payments and three months salary.
Most of Nigeria’s 36 states have increased salaries for employees this year.
Wages have also been increased in the private sector.
