State radio journalists threaten to strike

Radio journalists in Guinea-Bissau have threatened to go on strike to protest against the arrest of two of their colleagues on Saturday, AFP reported, quoting state radio’s editor-in-chief Insa Seidi.

Their “offence” was that they read a communique opposition parties had issued after politicians accused of supporting the attempt by the late General Ansumane Mane to seize control of the military were released on the order of a judge. The communique had said the “civilian opposition leaders were released for lack of conclusive evidence” against them.

The strike, set for Tuesday, is also against “interference by the director of communication” whom Seidi accused of censoring news on the opposition.
