Nigeria's Federal Government has authorised the dismissal of key officials at Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), after an infant was infected with HIV during a blood transfusion.
The baby tested HIV-positive just nine days after receiving the blood last November, despite both her parents being negative.
According to the local Daily Champion newspaper, a report issued by the federal government's investigating panel stated that the "lack of an ideal blood collection centre at LUTH", one of Nigeria's top health institutions, had resulted in the child becoming infected.
Nigerian Minister of Health Eyitayo Lambo said he hoped the decision to dismiss the officials would thwart further negligent practices by trained personnel, and announced that his department would provide full health insurance for the baby.
