Increased condom urged for HIV prevention

    JOHANNESBURG

    Ugandan Vice-President Gilbert Bukenya is lobbying for condoms to form a bigger part of HIV prevention efforts, the local New Vision newspaper reported.

    Uganda has often attributed its significant decline in HIV prevalence - from 20 percent in 1980 to six percent in 2000 - to the ABC [Abstain Be faithful or use Condoms] model.

    However, after finding that rates had stagnated and could be in danger of rising again, the government decided to launched an intensified prevention campaign.

    "The ABC strategy is still the best, but if our people can not abstain or be faithful, we must equip them with condoms," the local New Vision newspaper quoted Bukenya as saying.
