Former US president Bill Clinton has urged African countries to set ambitious goals in their fight against HIV/AIDS, Deutsche Presse-Agentur reported.
During a visit to the African Union headquarters in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, Clinton recalled that only four years ago anti-AIDS drugs had been expensive even by US standards.
He attributed the cost of antiretroviral therapy falling from US$500 per person per year to about $109 largely to the development of generic drugs.
Highlighting the pessimism still prevailing over whether all Africans would eventually receive treatment, Clinton said: "I hope we will be able to defeat such attitudes in my lifetime."
