The Group of Eight (G8) industrialised nations summit began on Saturday in St. Petersburg, Russia, amid calls for more funding and accuracy in HIV/AIDS treatment numbers.
The AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), an NGO running free treatment clinics in developing countries, demanded a more accurate global tally of the number of HIV-positive individuals receiving treatment in programmes funded by the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
AHF president Michael Weinstein charged that while the US President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and the Global Fund each claimed over 500,000 people were on antiretrovirals, there were overlaps between the numbers, with each often listing the same client or patient.
"We found there was double counting of more than 184,000 people between these two programmes in earlier progress reports on their treatment numbers," Weinstein said in a statement.
