Global Fund monies fall short

The Global Fund To Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria is calling on wealthy nations in Asia, Europe and the Middle East to increase their contributions, Reuters reported.

Senior officials for the Fund said some US$1 billion was still needed to meet existing commitments to fight infectious diseases in developing countries.

Global Fund communications director Jon Liden noted that while Britain and the US had fulfilled most of their pledges, other countries were still lagging behind.

"The European Union as a whole could do more ... [and] the Middle East sits on a fair amount of money," he commented.
