Activists welcome Gauteng AIDS budget

    JOHANNESBURG

    The South African AIDS lobby group, Treatment Action Campaign (TAC), on Tuesday welcomed an increased allocation in the Gauteng province's health department budget to combat the pandemic.

    Provincial health minister Brian Hlongwa set aside US$814,000 for AIDS care and treatment in the 2006/07 financial year, more than double the amount in last year's budget.

    Hlongwa said his department planned to use the funds to increase the number of people accessing free anti-AIDS drugs at public health facilities from the current 41,000 to 60,000 by the end of the year.

    TAC spokesman Nathan Geffen told the local Business Day newspaper: "The Gauteng government has consistently demonstrated its political will to make its interventions work, and this large increase in funding for HIV/AIDS continues this trend."
