Global HIV testing day proposed

US First Lady Laura Bush has recommended that a global annual HIV testing campaign be adopted by governments.

Bush told the closing session of the UN High Level Meeting on AIDS in New York on Friday that the US government would soon propose the designation of an 'International HIV Testing Day', similar to the US campaign every year on 27 June.

"I urge all member states to join us in support of this initiative," USnews.com quoted Bush as saying.

The US campaign was started in 1995 by the National Association of People with AIDS, which distributes kits to help health authorities promote the campaign in their area.
