Kenya/Brazil AIDS assault planned

    Brazil and Kenya announced plans earlier this week to pressure the upcoming World Health Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland, for more funds to combat neglected diseases, including HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. Confirming the joint plan, Davy Koech, director of the Kenya Medical Research Institute, said developing countries were suitably equipped to provide new solutions for old diseases. "But every day we see how difficult it is to get support for research and development into diseases that affect the poor, for which there is no profitable market," he told Kenya's East African Standard newspaper. The World Health Organisation has estimated that US$3 billion should be allocated annually for health issues affecting developing nations.
