Govts warned on AIDS cash mismanagement

The Global Fund against AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria is to reject requests for money by countries suspected of financial mismanagement, UN special envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa Stephen Lewis said on Wednesday.

"Countries found to be misusing the funds, also meant to fight malaria and tuberculosis, will have their allocations revoked or frozen," Lewis said during the on-going Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly in Kenya's capital, Nairobi.

He also reminded delegates how the Fund had already made good its threat in Nigeria.

Some US $50 million in Global Fund grants was recently suspended as a result of Nigeria's failure to meet performance targets.
