The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) says government must reverse its decision to exclude AIDS lobby groups from an upcoming UN General Assembly Special Session on AIDS.
Authorities barred the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) together with its affiliate, the AIDS Law Project, and about four other NGOs from attending the session in New York from 31 May to 2 June.
"South Africa needs the TAC, and the world has the right to hear their important contribution to the international debate on how to defeat this deadly epidemic," COSATU spokesperson Patrick Craven told the South African Press Association.
Meanwhile, TAC representatives who spent Monday afternoon in discussions with health department officials, declined to comment to avoid disrupting further negotiations over the exclusion.
