South Africa's first-ever Private-Sector Conference on HIV/AIDS kicked off on Wednesday in Midrand, near Johannesburg.
According to a statement issued by the South African Coalition on HIV/AIDS (SABCOHA), the three-day gathering, attended by 220 delegates representing medium and large businesses, international donors and the government, sought to generate new private-sector responses to the pandemic.
SABCOHA director Brad Mears said the decision to hold the conference had been influenced by rising HIV infections and the urgent need to take concrete measures.
In a statement he noted that "it is imperative for all businesses, large and small, to have a comprehensive AIDS strategy in place to protect their human and financial resources not only now, but for years to come".
