Conference highlights plight of OVC

Local and international delegates are attending a five-day conference in Johannesburg, South Africa, to discuss the needs of orphans and vulnerable children (OVC).

The meeting, organised by the Children in Distress Network (CINDI), an NGO set up to address the needs of children affected by HIV and AIDS, attracted about 500 delegates from Africa, Australia and the UK.

In her opening address, former CINDI member Zanele Hlatshwayo warned participants against allowing the gathering to be reduced to a "talk shop" without much being achieved.

"We cannot afford to reduce this conference to that, because children need somebody to champion their cause," the government news agency, BuaNews, quoted Hlatshwayo as saying.
