Additional OVC support urged

Save the Children, a British charity, called on Monday for greater international aid to be given to orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) in Africa.

In a new report, 'Missing on Mother's Day', the organisation said millions of youngsters were staying out of school to care for sick and dying parents.

"The AIDS pandemic robs children of their childhoods as well as their mothers. Children are caring for their mothers, missing school, and having to work because their mothers are too sick to look after them," the organisation's chief executive, Jasmine Whitbread, said in a statement.

Save the Children called for at least US $6.4 billion from role players for targeting children and families.
