US pledges more funds for AIDS in 2006

Kenya is to receive just over $208 million for HIV/AIDS in 2006 under the US President's Emergency Fund for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), Reuters reported. According to officials at the US embassy in the capital, Nairobi, more than half of the funding will go to expanding a programme currently providing anti-AIDS drugs to more than 35,000 people. Some $41 million of the remaining funds are to be spent on prevention, abstinence and "correct and consistent use of condoms". PEPFAR is a $15 billion initiative launched by President George W Bush in 2003 to tackle AIDS in 12 African countries and the Caribbean.
