First accredited prison anti-AIDS site unveiled

South Africa has unveiled its first accredited prison-based HIV/AIDS treatment site just outside Bloemfontein in the Free State province, the official BuaNews agency reported.

Provincial minister of health, Sakhiwe Belot, said the facility at Grootvlei prison would be overseen by his department and local correctional services.

The site had been equipped with the necessary resources, including a doctor, nurses and a pharmacy, to ensure the efficient rollout of antiretroviral therapy, Belot noted.

Although the government began implementing its national AIDS treatment plan in 2000, inmates at the country's 241 prisons have to be transported to treatment sites under strict security.
