Phase II HIV vaccine trials started

    JOHANNESBURG

    Uganda and the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) have launched a new phase of HIV vaccine trials.

    The 18-month human trials have enrolled 78 volunteers at five sites to test the safety and efficacy of the candidate vaccine.

    "Uganda provides an excellent scientific environment for the vaccine research and clinical trials because of the supportive government, and an energised and aware public," the local New Vision newspaper quoted IAVI president Seth Berkley as saying.

    Parallel trials are currently underway at three centres in South Africa, and plans are being made to test the vaccine in Zambia, pending regulatory approval.
