Global AIDS support needed - Govt

South Africa's HIV/AIDS fight needs the support of international organisations and donors, Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang has said.

However, she stressed that financial targets relating to the pandemic should not be set by international standards, as circumstances differed in various nations.

"Countries must be allowed to develop their own HIV/AIDS plan ... because it is at the country level that people would understand what needs to be done," the South African Press Association quoted the Minister as saying.

Tshabalala-Msimang's statement came at the end of a recent two-day UN meeting in Washington on increasing access to AIDS prevention, treatment and care.
