An effort to achieve the rollout of universal HIV/AIDS treatment by 2010 was launched at an international gathering in Washington earlier this week.
The initiative, announced at the UN Global Steering Committee meeting, aims to develop national roadmaps towards treatment access by building on current efforts to scale up anti-AIDS programmes in low- and middle-income countries.
"By starting at the country level and then tackling the big problems common to many countries and regions, we have the opportunity to find and address concrete, practical and workable solutions," UNAIDS country and regional support director Michel Sidibe, said in a statement.
Sidibe noted that broad participation and country-by-country focus during the two-day meeting was what made the new effort unique.
