US university study to examine AIDS treatment hurdles

    JOHANNESBURG

    Researchers from America's Michigan State University (MSU) are to examine the barriers faced by HIV-positive people accessing anti-AIDS treatment in Zambia.

    Gretchen Birbeck, the study's principal investigator, told the campus newspaper MSU Today, "While many more people on the African continent are now getting treatments for AIDS than in past years, an extremely large number, especially those living in rural areas, are dying due to lack of care."

    Birbeck said the project would also look for ways to overcome obstacles to treatment, and investigate the roles of socioeconomic status and AIDS-related stigma in hampering access to antiretrovirals.
