Greater AIDS effort urged by US official

US Congressman Chris Smith has called for greater commitment to the global fight against HIV/AIDS, Uganda's Daily Monitor newspaper reported. During a recent visit to the Bethlehem Medical Centre, an AIDS treatment clinic in the Ugandan capital, Kampala, Smith lamented increases in prevalence rates, especially in Africa. According to the latest UNAIDS epidemic update, an estimated 30 million Africans were currently living with the HI virus, including three million children under the age of 15. Smith stressed that the continent would only succeed in reversing the situation through strengthened international intervention.
